„After the summer storm the acoustic life of my building changed. From one day to the next, I began to hear new sounds, as if the removal of dirt deposits had freed up the gaps between floors, allowing every murmur from above to be heard below and vice versa. Coughs and sighs to creaks and thuds began to seep between the floorboards. They dropped in syllables onto my face, flustered the silence of my room. Often they would move away from the center and lap at all four corners and at the worst of times, when they were particularly loud, the overhead bulb would start to sway like a pendulum marking someone else’s tempo.“
